Best era of VWs

Recommended Posts

My wee Mk2 Polo been parked up for over three years now and not really been near it much in that time. I last started it halloween 2011 and it was halloween 2010 prior to that! Went out the other day charged battery while, but not enough, fired on jump leads turned over couple of times and burst into life running like a clock 8) The wee thing is indestructable. Personally I reckon VW were at the top of their game in the late 80s, MK2 Polo, Golf and Rocco best cars they ever made virtually bullet proof reliability! Don't think they'll ever top them again, even now how many folks still daily them and even now when over 20yr old still probably require less maintaining than alot of modern cars.

Have to agree. My granda bought a new Mk2 golf 1.6 diesel in 1989, it was passed onto dad in 05 when it had turned 220k. Dad used it as his daily for a year until rust made it no longer road worthy. It was scrapped at 230k and never gave any trouble in it's life! Was a great car.

Yeah, have to agree with this one. The problem now is that with trends in the market changing so rapidly it would be almost impossible for any manufacturer to keep a model in production for 9 years with minimal changes. Therefore there is not the same onus on the car companies to make sure a car will last past 10 years without major headaches. Back in the 80's VW did build them to last, the evidence is on the roads. How many mk2 Astras and MK3 Escorts are still going compared to the MK2 Golf?
