I have been picking up several items in the past following days in relation to so called old polluting cars and vans Should we who keep and run old cars be worried for the future especially those of us who have to keep to a strict budget and don't have deep pockets listening over the past several days there seems to be the possibility of big tax charges on the way and then some so called compensation to force the scrappage of older vehicles I briefly seen a news bulletin yesterday and an owner of a mk5 golf tdi was seen as an old and polluting diesel ! we know that car manufactures are now coming away from diesel because to take Diesel engines to the next stage will make them to expensive to be viable. the future is going to be interesting
  2. looks well tidy job like the spray booth can i ask what paint did he use- 2k or water based new paint the reason i ask is that any car painter i ask always say that with new water based paints to get a good finish the car should be placed in a oven! for some reason i find older (sorry senior) car painters prefer the old 2k over the water based paint love the mk1 gti Gerard

  4. thanks for the reply. just looking a cheap set to get a shed moving. have you got many mk2 bits ? will be looking many parts over the next year when I get around to starting it

      I have a few bits like braces and a stainless  exhaust but will be putting them all up for sale as I need the room.

  6. does any one know anywhere who hire self drive transporter - have a shell to transport and my car and van do not have a tow bar fitted
  7. Will always recommend this dealership. very friendly and the guys at the parts department (Steven and Andrew) are very helpful and patient especially with small and fiddly spares that other vw dealers can't be annoyed with and will always try to locate hard to get / obsolete parts
  8. it's probably the sub frame that has to be dropped - I di this when putting my car back together only to find when it came to the exhaust that the engine subframe had to be dropped to fit the front pipe. I had to suspend the engine on the crane and drop the subframe again to fit it. don't know any other way around it

Hello i am having difficulty belled the brakes to my corrado g60 i managed to do the calipers ok and the clutch master cylinder - all run free with plenty of fluid however the brake master cylinder once opened pushes about a 50mm of fluid into a tube and thats it! i have not touched the reservoir bleed point iam using the eazibleed unit - uses 20psi pressure i read somewhere that the abs pump needs bled also - where do you bleed this - plenty of bolts on it but dont want to open the wrong one. thanks
  11. I done the rears first then the front then the master cylinder and finally the clutch when the brakes were done I moved to under the bonnet. Bentley manual says that you bleed master cylinder first before the clutch to me seems strange to me as we all know air rises to the top and I would of assumed that you start at the bottom. bleeding the abs pump I have seen mentioned but cannot locate an obvious point on the unit the rears took a long time to do and I had to manually adjust the bias valve in order to get things moving also had a few small leaks but a quick tighten of the nipples sorted it out - always afraid of over tightening these things. the car has not run in over 2 years now and was hoping to get it started yesterday only to find the fuel pump is not running. I can hear the relay clicking but pump is not priming and of course I went to get my multimeter and it is dead also the fuel gauge is working which may indicate that the pump is dead.
  12. hello just a question I have come across a golf tdi estate (x reg) with a broken timing belt the head has apparently been removed and one valve is bent i know little about Diesel engines what else can be damaged and should be taken into consideration is £350 a fair price car has approx 125k
  13. thanks for the reply. had a quick look on the web today but could not find very much on a tdi engine with a broken timing belt As I say I know virtually nothing about diesels i found one item and having a very quick read from what I can gather the head will be scrap and there may be a chance the con rod will be bent something to do with the valves position once they come together along with the followers i thought it would be a relatively straight repair - new valve or valves with new followers LOL the car I believe is poverty spec it has hub caps
  14. hello. does anyone know what is the closest material to existing Volkswagen underseal Just spent yesterday spraying the repair areas of repairs on the underside of my corrado i bought genuine vw underseal and looking at it this morning it looks utter rubbish and it looks like icing sugar and although not completely cured I don't think it would stand up to our winter weather or stones the texture is completely different I followed instructions using the Schultz gun and was not exactly cheap at almost £30 a litre i used a litre yesterday and have pre ordered another 2 litres arriving today which I feel will only go into the bin! what I don't look forward is trying to remove it now as below it is seam sealer which I took time seal all welding repairs

Yes I am guilty of the above I motd my car last year and done about 2 miles before its mot ran out (have not bothered to mot it again until maybe next summer?) they are getting rare especially rust free ones and will continue to climb in price if money is your aim , I just like mk2 golfs gti's as when I was learning to drive these were the cars that everyone wanted and some other GM crap! Mine is far from perfect and everytime I look at it I find faults but I will not part with it as it was my first resto. Come to think of it I have not seen one from last summer on the road (15)
  20. sorry did not realise it was a modern engine you were reassembling mine was a kr lump with 120k from an era where tolerances were not so critical
  21. never used any assembly lube on mine, I just gave mine a good soaking in oil with a hand pump of all components prior to fitting cam cover etc shells etc were given a soaking in oil before being torqued up but I disconnected the fuel pump and turned the engine over for a minute or so so the oil pump was putting oil everywhere and to date no problems this was my first attempt at an engine build which may be wrong but was a learning curve for me

  23. not a bad programme but could not believe it did not need some body work issues (rear arch where it meets the sill) roof rubbers, door window rubber seals etc!, but makes me wish to push on with mine! mine is still in bits all over the floor (92 g60) 5.5k !!!
